Medical Conditions and Functional Limitations
The Social Security Administration is concerned with what your physical and mental health diagnoses are, but also with the limitations arising from those physical and mental health diagnoses. For instance, many individuals suffer from one or more forms of arthritis: when you apply for Social Security disability benefits, physicians and psychologists read through your medical records to determine how severe your arthritis is and how it would affect your abilities to perform the various physical requirements of different types of jobs. Is your arthritis bad enough that it would limit your ability to: stand for long periods?; Sit for long periods?; lift weight?; bend or stoop? reach, handle, finger, or feel?
Some conditions are severe enough that they are presumed to keep you from performing any type of work. Some conditions prevent you from performing some work activities but not others.
